Dating & Relationships: Core Values

The following is a free preview of Chapter 3 from my eBook on dating and relationships.

Early in the relationship, each party must ask him or herself, “Why am I going on this date?” Yes, it could be to have fun. Sure, it might be to gain be to gain valuable experience. Obviously, it could be to score free pizza. And, of course, free pizza should never be taken lightly – especially if it is kind with cheese in the crust.

Really though, the point of the date is to find out what kind of person you are dealing with. Is this someone you could spend the rest of your life with? If yes, great! But why waste time if there is a mismatch of core values? For that reason, I find it best to get the really important issues on the table early. I’m talking about the absolute must-haves in a partner. These are the “deal-breakers” if you will. Below are some examples. If there answer is “no” to any of these questions you MUST get out of there as soon as possible. For that reason, it is best to ask these questions immediately:
  • Do you think Larry Bird was an angel?
  • Would you agree that Hulk Hogan was the best wrestler of all time?
  • Do you like poodles?
  • Do you know who the Old Man on the Mountain was?
  • Did you cry when he died?
  • Do you think the song “I believe I can fly” is stupid? (Nobody can fly, sorry)
  • Was the Cookie Monster a key influence on you growing up?
  • Do you still miss Antoine Walker?
  • Do you like this cologne that makes me smell like Taco Bell?
  • Do you think it is a good idea to always poke the people in your Facebook “Suggested Pokes” list?
  • If you had to choose between me and Tom Brady, who would you choose? (Trick question, no right answer)
  • Was “Endless Love” performed by Lionel Ritchie and Diana Ross the most romantic song ever made?

If the answer is “YES” to all these questions, you’ve found a special person, indeed.
