Arms of Love
I remember times when we would get back so late at night. Our relatives lived pretty far away and we would pull into the driveway at an hour us kids weren’t used to seeing. And, some of us never did see those hours. Those who were able slept in the car and not all of us awoke when we finally got back home. I remember my sister getting carried from the car into the house by my father. She lay like a brick in his hands. It is, I think, an image that says a few things about how good fathers are supposed to act. The one of strength carries and comforts his prized possession. The weak, needy and powerless are safe and protected in the father’s strong arms of love.
He tends his flock like a shepherd:
He gathers the lambs in his arms
and carries them close to his heart;
he gently leads those that have young.
-Isaiah 40:11
So do not fear, for I am with you;
do not be dismayed, for I am your God.
I will strengthen you and help you;
I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.
-Isaiah 41:10
