Head Over Heels

I came across this interesting story from 1 Samuel 5:1-5 today:

“After the Philistines had captured the ark of God, they took it from Ebenezer to Ashdod. Then they carried the ark into Dagon’s temple and set it beside Dagon. When the people of Ashdod rose early the next day, there was Dagon, fallen on his face on the ground before the ark of the LORD! They took Dagon and put him back in his place. But the following morning when they rose, there was Dagon, fallen on his face on the ground before the ark of the LORD! His head and hands had been broken off and were lying on the threshold; only his body remained. That is why to this day neither the priests of Dagon nor any others who enter Dagon’s temple at Ashdod step on the threshold.”

Here is an idol crashing and on its face before the ark of God.  Worship does not belong to idols, worship belongs to God.  Even an idol falls down in a position of worship.  To whom can God be compared?

When Pharisees were trying to keep the worship of God from being proclaimed, Jesus remarked “if they keep quiet, the stones will cry out”.

There is a want, desire, and need to worship.  Many things are the object of worship, but only God is worthy.  If we don’t do it, even the stones will cry out.

And I will give you all my worship, I will give you all my praise.  You alone I long to worship, You alone are worthy of my praise…
